New Jersey Child Assault Prevention (CAP) currently has about 200 facilitators statewide, however, we are always looking for adults from the communities we serve to facilitate our CAP workshops in preschools, elementary and high schools. The position of facilitator requires an individual to be able to work during school hours. The work is part-time and generally is only during the school year. This may vary from county to county. The CAP county coordinator can provide accurate information on schedule and payment. The Regional Training Center requires background checks for everyone in the CAP network who goes into the schools to work with children.
Requirements to be certified as a CAP facilitator: 1) must be at least 18 years of age 2) demonstrate understanding and willingness to advocate for children 3) attend a NJ CAP four day training for specific curricula 4) pre & post training interview with county coordinator 5) give a one-year commitment 6) background checks
Type of skills we are looking for:
We are looking for people that are non-judgmental, empathetic, possess good listening skills, are punctual, and caring. We also like our volunteers to have some experience in public speaking and experience in working with children and youth. Having knowledge of a second language is also a plus.
CAP Coordinators are specifically in need of male facilitators who can work in TEEN CAP, a program which calls for both male and female facilitators. We are also very interested in recruiting minorities and Spanish speaking facilitators.
County CAP projects have many needs that can be offset by volunteer assistance. Volunteers can help local projects with planning of fund raisers and special events, staffing booths at community fairs, assisting in the project office, entering statistics, filing, purchasing project materials, making dolls for the preschool project, finding sources of additional funding, writing grant proposals, etc. Whatever the strengths and skills of the volunteers, they can be utilized by the CAP project.
- Although CAP has presented its empowerment strategies to parents, teachers and children in over 85 % of New Jersey’s school districts, there are some districts that have not yet had the CAP program. Utilizing your community contacts can help CAP by assisting in the recruitment of districts that have never had CAP and districts that have not had CAP recently.
Presently CAP has approximately about 200 facilitators statewide. CAP County Coordinators frequently need to recruit new facilitators who are not only child advocates but who have flexible schedules and are available for part time work. Many mothers who are able to stay home with their children appreciate the CAP ‘school hours’. The workshop schedules allow them to be home when their school age children are home.
NJ CAP believes that the entire community needs to get involved to make child abuse and youth violence a public issue. This is probably one of the reasons why you may be interested in getting involved - to create change in your community. The demand for our program is great and the more staff we have trained, the more schools we can serve. Thank you for your interest in the CAP Training Center and the work we do in the community.
